04.08.10 Skainos - Where did the name come from? What does it mean? How do you pronounce it?
First the easy one: it's pronounced 'skay-nos'.
The word is derived from the original Greek translations of the New Testament. It literally means 'tent' and became a euphemism for 'home' or the place you lived.
It was chosen as a name for the project because it expresses the hope of regeneration and renewal. It communicates a desire to be a living, vital presence in this part of Belfast; to literally be a home in some cases, but also be a place where people of all communities find a warm welcome and where they feel valued and safe.
