The Old Throne Hospital Built in 1874 (designed by architect Timothy Hevey) the existing building is strongly characterised by the use of polychromatic brick detail with sandstone dressing. The interior spaces of the building have been reinvigorated with a muted palette of materials and finishes that allow elements of the original building, (e.g. exposed brick walls and trusses,) to register against a new delicately-industrial aesthetic that characterises the emergent volumes. A planned extension of 4,500 sq ft is in a deliberately more contemporary vein and is due for construction in 2004.
