St Nicholas’ Primary School

Construction cost: £1.1 M

"A thoughtfully planned school ... at the heart of a good learning environment". The new St Nicholas’ Primary School was constructed between December 1995 and March 1997 as a single storey split level building. It encompasses 8 classrooms planned around a glazed "atria" which provides a bright and welcoming resource area to supplement classroom areas.

The project consists of a new build 8 classroom school in the grounds of the existing school. The proposals were carried out in 3 consecutive phases. Phase 1 saw partial demolition of the existing school building over the summer holidays. Phase 2 involved construction of 8 no classrooms and associated resource area, stores, etc. Phase 3 involved demolition of the existing school and construction of the new multipurpose hall, stores and school meals accommodation linked into the new classrooms.

All materials used are durable but warm. The detailing is skilfully refined to suit each individual area. Budgets and programmes were continually monitored throughout the development of the scheme, allowing the client to be kept fully informed at all stages.

Passive solar design was incorporated to utilise solar heat whilst allowing natural cooling in summer. Acoustic requirements were addressed by timber panelled ceilings and the Helmholtz details in the walls.
